Ok so it’s not ‘really’ circus but it’s pretty close to Chinese pole and some of the games I played in circus school!
From summer 1998 through to the summer of 1999 I was living in America. During that time I went to see Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba, their permanent show at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Cirque du Soleil didn’t have as many permanent shows then as they do now and to get to see one of them was pretty special for me. Generally speaking, I’ve rarely been a big fan of Cirque du Soleil’s shows but I have to admit that I remember thoroughly enjoying La Nouba, particularly the Flying Trapeze. However, there was also something unusual in the show, something I don’t think I’d ever seen done, as an act, in a circus: Bikes. Continue reading “I Can Ride A Bike”
Danish hand balancing sensation John Seidel (Le Petit John/Little John)
The last trick….. :-0
Note from Arron: After a bit of digging I found this video of Little John when he was… little!
If anyone has a website/knows more information about Little John then please leave a comment!
I was lucky enough to be in the same show as Pat Bradford and Kate in 2008, really nice people and a class act. One of the best hand-balancing acts of all time.
Jochen Schell has been a pioneer in manipulation technique and aesthetic for decades. Creating truly inspiring original work.
In my opinion a must watch video of the legendary Archaos Circus, won’t be every ones thing but worth a watch none the less, inspiring, raw and pioneering stuff!
Also more info on a new archive website which has been set-up in memory of founder Pierrot Bidon and all the other artists, technicians and members of Archaos Circus: http://archaos.info/
Duo Valeri won Bronze at Circo Latina in 2009, makes me think I need to get to the gym more often!
If you know there website address please leave a comment!
Charlie Dancey has realsed a new book covering many juggling, magic and miscellaneous tricks. It’s a great read and worth having for those unpredictable times on stage… when folding a T-shirt quickly could be useful.

Rob Torres really connects with his audience, I know I’ve been part of one!
Sadly Rob Torres passed away, more here:

From midgets, wolfboys and human pin-cushions to Siamese twins, snake charmers and sword swallowers, the circus sideshow isn’t often seen alongside the main attraction any more.
But while the Sideshow element of circuses, carnivals and fairs may have dwindled, the Circus Sideshow, the Freakshow, and the Circus Freaks and Geeks themselves (see my previous post) are aliving and kicking. Continue reading “The Lost Circus Sideshow”
I’ve watched his (amazing) trick videos before but I thought it was nice to get an insight into his approach and opinions…
“At the height of the Great Depression, the showman (Eduardo Verastegui) of a renowned circus leads his troupe through the devastated American landscape, lifting the spirits of audiences along the way. During their travels they discover Will (Nick Vujicic), a man without limbs at a carnival sideshow, but after an intriguing encounter with the showman he becomes driven to hope against everything he has ever believed”

Kristian Kristof is often sharing great finds on his Facebook page so we thought it was only right to point you in the direction of his own work:
Tanja & Frida – beautiful and inventive doubles trapeze with unusual quality of movement.
Circus scenes directed by Urs Jäckle, Artistic Director at the Krystallpalast Varieté in Leipzig, Germany.
At the Circus Open Space there was a great topic of conversation suggested by Mish Weaver; ‘The BEST trick you have ever seen’.
I got quite excited by this conversation because it’s the main reason I became interested in circus. I love tricks.
I have a poor memory when it comes to names and other important details about artists but for some reason I remember tricks. I get annoyed when people dismiss this element in traditional circus, so many times I’ve heard the equivalent statement that contemporary circus ‘stays with you’, implying that an awesome trick doesn’t. Well it does for me. And here is (putting the ethics debate to one side) an awesome trick:
From an unknown circus on Nanwan Monkey Island situated in Lingshui County, South China’s Hainan Province (according to YouTube).
An interesting looking documentary film about a traveling Mexican circus troupe that has lived and performed on the road since the 19th Century. But can their art survive into the 21st?
